Dragon Boat Festival Cultural Experience Brings International Students Closer to Taiwanese Traditions
To promote cultural exchange and help international students gain a deeper understanding of Taiwanese traditions, the Office of Global Affairs organized the “Dragon Boat Festival Cultural Experience: Zongzi Wrapping and Sachet Making Workshop” on June 16. The event provided students with an opportunity to explore one of Taiwan’s most important traditional festivals through hands-on activities and meaningful cultural interactions.
During the workshop, participants learned how to make traditional rice dumplings (zongzi) under the guidance of experienced instructors. From preparing ingredients and folding bamboo leaves to filling and tying the dumplings, students experienced every step of the process firsthand. They also created fragrant sachets, a traditional Dragon Boat Festival item symbolizing good fortune, health, and protection.
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many students shared that they especially enjoyed learning the techniques of wrapping rice dumplings and making fragrant sachets. Others highlighted the opportunity to experience Taiwanese culture in a hands-on way, from food preparation to traditional crafts. Several students commented that every part of the event was enjoyable and engaging.
In addition to cultural learning, the event also provided a valuable platform for social interaction. Many participants appreciated the chance to meet new friends, connect with students from different countries, and share their cultural experiences in a welcoming environment.
Through activities such as this, the Office of Global Affairs continues to support international students’ cultural adaptation and sense of belonging while fostering a diverse and inclusive campus community. Future cultural programs will continue to provide opportunities for students from around the world to learn, connect, and create lasting memories during their time in Taiwan.
