Nobel Laureate Prof. Aaron Ciechanover Visits China Medical University for Inspiring Lecture on Personalized Medicine

2004 Nobel Chemistry Laureate Prof. Aaron Ciechanover was invited to China Medical University (CMU) on January 9 under the Taiwan Bridges Program to deliver a special lecture on the theme “Personalized Medicine Revolution: Are We Going to Cure All Diseases and at What Price?” The event attracted around 300 faculty members and students from CMU, creating a full house and a lively atmosphere. The enthusiastic discussions and interactions during the session provided valuable insights and inspiration for the CMU community.

Prof. Ciechanover, a Distinguished Research Professor at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, received the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his groundbreaking discovery of the ubiquitin system, which revealed how cells regulate and recycle proteins and opened new directions for understanding and treating many diseases.

In his lecture at CMU, Prof. Ciechanover emphasized that no two individuals are biologically identical, so medical treatment should move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach. With advances in genomics and molecular biology, therapies can now be tailored to individual patients, making it possible to improve treatment outcomes and turn many serious diseases into controllable conditions.

The session was moderated by Academician Mien-Chie Hung, former president of CMU. During the discussion period, the two scholars engaged in an open exchange of ideas with students and faculty. The conversation was lively and engaging, with active participation from the audience.

During his visit, Prof. Ciechanover also toured the CMU Bio Park, including the CMU-NVIDIA Joint Laboratory and the Kyoto University-CMU Joint Laboratory, gaining firsthand insight into CMU’s advanced research facilities.

The Taiwan Bridges Program, jointly promoted by the International Peace Foundation, Academia Sinica, National Taiwan University, and leading universities across Taiwan, aims to strengthen global academic exchange by inviting Nobel laureates and distinguished scholars to share their knowledge through public lectures and in-depth discussions, fostering dialogue between Taiwan and the international scientific community.
