International Students Experience Harris’s Hawk Up Close in Falconry Encounter
The Office of Global Affairs successfully hosted a falconry encounter on December 9 giving international students a rare opportunity to engage directly with a Harris’s Hawk, one of the world’s most recognized raptor species.
During the session, the professional falconer introduced students to the fundamentals of caring for a hawk, including feeding routines, training techniques, and the distinct needs of birds at different life stages. Participants also learned how to interpret the hawk’s body language and emotional cues—knowledge essential for professional falconry work.
A highlight of the activity was the close-up interaction. Each student had the chance to approach the hawk under guided supervision, observe its behavior at arm’s length, and even gently touch its feathers. Many described the experience as transformative, with one student commenting that it felt “just like stepping into a National Geographic documentary.”
The event not only deepened students’ understanding of wildlife ecology but also provided meaningful cultural exchange and stress relief in a natural outdoor setting. The Office of Global Affairs will continue organizing experiential learning activities that enrich international students’ campus life and promote environmental awareness.
