International Students Explore the Beauty of Taiwan at Gaomei Wetlands and Lighthouse

On November 6, international students joined the “Gaomei Wetlands and Lighthouse Cultural-Ecology Tour,” an immersive experience designed to help them discover Taiwan’s unique natural environment and local culture.

Built in 1967, the Gaomei Lighthouse is a historic monument featuring an octagonal reinforced-concrete structure. It is the only lighthouse in Taiwan painted with red and white horizontal stripes — a design meant to warn ships to keep away from the shore. The 12-story tower offers different panoramic views of the wetlands from each level.

The Gaomei Wetlands, composed of both muddy and sandy tidal flats, are home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including birds, fish, crabs, and other invertebrates. The visit happened to take place the day after the Super Moon, allowing students to spot even more species than usual, such as mudskippers, curved fiddler crabs, and milky fiddler crabs.

The tour was conducted in small groups, giving international students the opportunity to meet peers from various countries while deepening their connection with Taiwan through ecological and cultural exploration.
