Mandarin Summer Camp at China Medical University: Bridging Language and Culture to Inspire Study and Work in Taiwan

From June 23 to 27, 2025, the Office of International Students Employment Counseling, Office of Global Affairs, at China Medical University hosted the Beginner Mandarin Summer Camp, which concluded successfully.

Designed for international students with beginner-level Chinese skills, the camp aimed to help participants apply Mandarin in everyday life through intensive language training and immersive cultural experiences. The program enhanced students’communication abilities, while also sparking motivation to stay and work in Taiwan, and nurturing a sense of cultural appreciation and belonging.

On June 24, our students joined the “One-Day Pastry Chef” tour at the Sun Cake Museum (Quan An Tang), where they made traditional sun cakes by hand. The guided walk through the old Taichung city center introduced historic and revitalized landmarks along the Liuchuan and Luchuan rivers, including Qingcao Street, ASEAN Plaza, Sakura Bridge, Xinsheng Bridge, Miyahara Ophthalmology, and the Taichung Train Station, each reflecting the intertwined stories of people, rivers, and architecture.

On June 25, the activity “Half-Half Multicultural Cuisine Experience” brought students to the Second Market for a shopping task using only NT$200 and Mandarin to buy assigned ingredients. They then played a snack tasting guessing game, followed by a hands-on cooking session where they made a Taiwanese-style vegetarian minced ‘meat’ rice meal at Backpacker 41 Hostel.

Spanning five days, the camp bridged textbook learning with real-world scenarios—from greetings and market bargaining to food culture and local storytelling. It empowered students to use Chinese with confidence and forged cross-cultural friendships that may well be the first step toward their future in Taiwan.
