NAFSA Annual Exhibition 2009

NAFSA (National Association of Foreign Student Advisers, the name was changed into Association of International Educators in 1990) aims at promoting international education, providing professional development opportunities, assisting member countries to design exchange programs and setting a network of all member countries. The annual exhibition 2009, with the topic “Fostering Global Engagement through International Education”, was held from May 24 to 29 2009 at Los Angeles Convention Center. On behalf of China Medical University the Assistant Professor of Graduate Institute of Acupuncture Science, Sheng-Feng Hsu, and administrative assistant of Center for International Affairs, Laurel Lai, participated in the exhibition.

The secretary of Cultural Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, Tony Lee, and the executive officer, Rebecca Lan, welcomed all distinguished guests attending at NAFSA. The President of University of the West, Allen M. Huang (黃茂樹), sincerely invited our president to visit University of the West and hoped to be one of our partner institutions. In addition, Rebecca encouraged students in Los Angeles who are willing to study at CMU to apply for the scholarship after realizing CMU’s features.

The annual exhibition commenced on May 26 2009. NAFSA held the briefing for participants to understand NAFSA’s operation. The assistant director of Center for International Programs Abroad at Emory University, Kenya Casey, presented that the exhibition was a great opportunity for all participants to connect with their partner institutions and solidify the network. In addition, German Academic Exchange Service (or DAAD, Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst ) delivered a talk with the topic “Measuring Impact: Learning from Evaluation to Assess Study Abroad Outcomes” to discuss the importance and the intention of studying abroad. The speaker claimed that students’ motivation, close connection between two universities, cultural awareness and effective organization are vital for students studying overseas and also suggested that studying overseas for a long time is a good means to understand cultural difference.

During the period of the exhibition, we visited the booths of our partner institutions, including Youngsan University, Medical University of Graz, Southern California University of Health Sciences, Mahidol University, Kyung Hee University, Brock University, University of Toronto and Leiden University. We briefly discussed the exchange programs with these universities. Some universities would like to become CMU’s partner institutions. For instance, on behalf of University of California, Riverside, Christine Liu, introduced their specialties and expressed the desire to have exchange programs with CMU.

We sincerely appreciated NAFSA to organize the fabulous 2009 Annual Exhibition. CMU made a great progress in networking with our partner institutions and hoped that the advertisement about CMU would promote its international status. In conclusion, we strongly believe that CMU will have many opportunities to collaborate with prestigious universities in the future.
