Introduction

Xiamen University , colloquially known as Xia Da is a university located in Xiamen, Fujian province. It is notable as the first university in China founded by overseas Chinese. Originally known as Amoy University, the institution was established in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee (also known as Chen Jiageng, 陈嘉庚), a Chinese businessman, community leader, and philanthropist active in Southeast Asia. Xiamen University is one of many comprehensive universities directly administered by the Chinese Ministry of Education. According to the University Undergraduates Teaching Assessment and the Chinese Universities Evaluation Standings, Xiamen University is ranked 11th in China and has maintained a Top 20 ranking in China, among which 6 subjects reach A++ level, including economics and management, fine art, law, chemistry, journalism, communication and mathematics. The School of Management is accredited by EQUIS and the Association of MBAs. Xiamen University has also been ranked Top 10 in China and Top 100 in worldwide institutions by Nature Index, a database of primary research articles published in a selection of 68 journals chosen for their perceived quality. As of September 2017, the university's entering class has grown to over 10,000 first-year students.
